Anybody left over here? Just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that Dilana's triumphant return to Houston was a smash, babies!!! A SMASH!! Sold-out, mind-blown crowd. She poured out everything for us, and we ate it up. We sang with her, we screamed for her, and we LOVED IT!!!!
And can I just say? That band is sh*t hot. When they break into le roc, the crowd goes wild and the house shakes. It's a beautiful thing.
The covers were superb, as we'd expect, including a fine rendition of "Eleanor Rigby" and a lovely "Wicked Game". And of course, she was home in Houston, so we all sang a hokey-jokey (but reverent, yes, reverent) version of "Mercedes Benz" during which she hit a note - you know, that one at the end - and it seriously stopped my heart. She did sound so much like Mama Pearl, it haunted us all. I had never been so moved. Janis was with us, to be sure. It was cool.
"Super Soul" is a raging wonder of an anthem, and had us all pumping our fists in the air during the choruses. Man, that was a hell of a show.
The high point for me was a personal one, though. As I turned around once during the show, I saw a friendly face from my past, in the days when I was playing rockstar here in the tiny Houston scene of the 90's. She had been a bartender at one of our regular gig spots, and another bartender from back in the day was with her. She told me how much she missed those shows, and they both complimented me on me ol' pipes. "You can sing your ass off." ... sigh, I too was a rockstar. Once.
